Teaching in a different language; no more Soy Lattes after class?

I've been teaching in Turkish for a while now, and it's interesting to observe that it's not easy! I was expecting this, it did not come as a surprise. There really was no way to prepare for actual interactions with students in a different language than I have been accustomed to. Even if I rehearsed, read Turkish yoga books, or wrote down a sample class in Turkish (all which I did), nothing can replace the actual moment where the interaction has to take place organically. Only in my 12th class did I feel like I was relaying almost everything I wanted to, in the way I wanted to, that felt natural to me, in Turkish. (and even then it felt incomplete) I felt like my yoga teacher self again, who I had felt had disappeared in the first few classes. In those classes I felt like a child, who'd say to an adult "I know so much more than I can explain, honestly, I can say all this in a more worldly way...really! just wait." No need for gyms!

Scientific evidence   that yoga   IS   enough to keep you fit.  I always knew this to be true. I'm so glad someone did the research. Where else other than in California? Yay!  I'm so glad, because I never liked gyms. The remaining challenge is to make time for yoga and pranayama, and meditation daily.  Reminds me of the gym buffs who'd come to class and not be able to hold Trikonasana, and feel crushed.

Having a celebrity in my class

It has to be mentioned, I can't pretend it didn't happen, even though I don't have a photo with him... I got to teach an A-list celebrity yoga recently. I was filling in for another teacher that day in May, and there are a few things about gyms that are different than yoga studios: people do come in late, they have a different sense of etiquette and often either miss meditation or savasana. I'm used to it by now. There I was, teaching Ashtanga Intro on a weekend, and the door had already opened twice, interrupting the flow of the class. The third time the door opened, 10 minutes into class, this scruffy guy with a baseball cap walks in. He goes, "is this Ashtanga Intro?" . I say, "yes, and you can get your strap there" , pointing to the bag of straps, annoyed. Next thing you know, he takes off his baseball cap, and I realize it's him.
